Unicornalia (Special) – It’s not ME.

Published February 20, 2012 by Mistletoe

If there’s one thing that ruffles my feathers, it’s the kind of people who take personally what I have to say about the institution of religion and in particular, instances in which religion is forced into my life. Now, living where I do, most of the time, that religion is Christianity; therefore I’m most likely to single it out over any other. I can assure you, when laws are passed regarding my body in accordance with Islam, I’ll have plenty to say about it. When people are denied equal rights based on Hinduism, I’ll mock the hell out of it.

But, I digress.

When I’m mocking religious institutions (really, the key point of this comic), I don’t care if YOU the individual aren’t like that and don’t do that. I don’t care if YOU are so much more liberal-minded and enlightened than the religion you claim to be part of. For one thing, it’s the “No True Scotsman” fallacy; for another, YOU don’t have some special supernatural claim that nobody else seems to get yet, as if YOU figured it all out but nobody else who claims to be of the same faith as you has. And finally, as Delia says: it’s not all about YOU. Good for YOU that you have a moral compass that points YOU away from the Bible and more toward basic human decency. It’s simply further evidence that YOU don’t even need YOUR religion to be a decent and moral human being.

But rather than defending yourself to ME, why don’t YOU speak to/against those members of YOUR religion who YOU believe got it wrong? Why not live by example, rather than words, and go about YOUR life without worrying about what I have to say?
